Excerpt from a book chapter authored by Crabb and contributed to a volume entitled "American Grape Growing and Wine Making." He briefly describes the history of wine growing in California and discusses his methods for planting, grafting, and pruning vines. In 1878, his vineyard of 120 acres yielded 5.5 tons per acre, 30 acres of which were only three years old. In 1879, the yield was 4 tons per acre.
