Proceedings of the convention of the Napa Viticultural Club, held on April 19, 1883, in Napa County. Discussion topics included the preparation of land for planting, best varietals to plant, advice for successful cultivation and pruning, etc. Crabb was in ill health and could not attend, but sent wine for tasting by the wine committee and was mentioned by other attendees. Mr. Hussman relates that Crabb was having success with Lenoir grapes (resistant to phylloxera and produces good wine); Mr. Wetmore indicates that using Lenoir grapes for an unblended wine is unheard of in the States, and Crabb had only begun experimenting with it in the past two years. Crabb's red wines were evaluated by the tasting committee as follows: Teinturier, 1882, excellent; Gayman, 1882, very good; Charbono, 1882, good; Oeil de Perdriz, 1882, excellent; Black Burgundy (Petit Pinot), 1882, excellent; Malbec, 1882, excellent, very commendable for propagation; Lenoir, 1882, very good, excels in color and tannin; Australian Claret, no age given, very good; Australian Hermitage, no age given, remarkably good.
